Final May U. of Mich. Index at 81.9 vs. 84.1 in April

The University of Michigan's final May consumer sentiment index reading was 81.9, compared to the preliminary May 81.8, and the final April 84.1, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 73.7, compared to the preliminary May 73.2, 74.7 in the final April reading, and 73.3 in the preliminary April report.

The current conditions index was 94.5, compared to the preliminary May 95.1, 98.7 in the final April reading, and 97.1 in the preliminary April report.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 82.5 reading for the main index, 95.8 for current conditions and 74.0 for expectations.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.9% in April, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 3.3%, compared to 3.2% in April.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
