Chafee Ups Transparency in Rhode Island

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced a transparency and accountability initiative, the goal of which, he said in an executive order, is to make more information about government operations and management available to the public.

Rhode Islanders, he said, will have access to several documents already uploaded to the state government transparency portal, www.transparency.ri.gov.

Chafee said over 18 months, on a rolling basis, the state will continue to add financial reports, audits, forms and other financial information such as contracts, grants and quasi-public agency expenditures.

“The people of Rhode Island deserve more and better information about the operation and management of their government,” Chafee said in a statement.

“I believe that greater openness and transparency will ultimately strengthen our citizens’ faith in their government, bolster our national reputation, and increase our economic competitiveness,” he said.

“We applaud the recently announced initiatives,” said Nathaniel Heller, executive director of Global Integrity, a Washington-based good government lobbying group.
