Residents in Richland County, S.C., started paying an extra penny sales tax Wednesday, which will provide $1 billion for transportation projects over the next 22 years.
The tax will provide cash for projects and will also back $450 million of general obligation bonds.
The tax and bond authority were approved by voters in November.
Richland County, home to the state capital in Columbia, intends to spend $656 million on roadway improvements, $301 million on bus services, and $80.9 million on bike and pedestrian improvements as well as greenways.
