Miller Canfield Taps Public Finance Vet as New CEO

CHICAGO — Michigan law firm Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone PLC has named long-time bond attorney Michael McGee as chief executive officer.

McGee replaces Michael Hartmann, who stepped down after six years as CEO. Hartmann will serve as the firm's in-house general counsel and continue his practice as a commercial litigator, the firm said in an announcement released Monday morning.

McGee, who is 58, has been at Miller Canfield for 28 years. He has served as bond counsel on all types of transactions, and has spent the last few years working closely with the city of Detroit as it navigates through its financial troubles. Miller Canfield serves as the local outside counsel on the city's restructuring.

"It's a privilege to be the CEO of Miller Canfield, a great legal institution with a long history of service and innovation," McGee said in a statement. "I'm grateful for this opportunity and honored to lead the creative, dedicated and talented professionals who comprise our firm."

Miller Canfield has more than 300 attorneys in all major areas of law, with 17 offices globally.

The firm was the top bond counsel in the Midwest last year, working on 128 deals valued at $4.2 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.
