Conference Board March Consumer Confidence Index Falls to 59.7

The consumer confidence index fell to 59.7 in March from a downwardly revised 68.0 last month, The Conference Board reported Tuesday.

The February index was originally reported as 69.6.

The present situation index dropped to 57.9 from 61.4 while the expectations index plunged to 60.9 from 72.4.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters predicted a 68.0 reading for the index.
