Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announced Monday his choice of Cleveland-based law firm Jones Day to serve as counsel for the city’s restructuring plan. The City Council still needs to approve the contract.
The contract is one of a series of hires of outside firms required under the consent decree signed between the city and Michigan last year.
Jones Day has an “international reputation for its successful representation of clients engaged in large restructuring programs,” the mayor said in a press release.
“The experience of the Jones Day law firm will be a valuable asset as we proceed with our plan for restructuring the city of Detroit,” Bing said.
The announcement came the day before a Tuesday appeal hearing in Lansing on Gov. Rick Snyder’s decision to put the city under emergency financial management.
If the financial emergency is affirmed after the hearing, Snyder is widely expected to name an emergency manager within the next several days.
The Detroit Free Press reported Monday that Kevyn Orr, a partner at Jones Day, is Snyder’s top choice as EFM.
