N.M. Budget Bill Funds Raises

The New Mexico House Appropriations and Finance Committee approved a fiscal 2014 budget totaling almost $6 billion that includes a 1% pay raise for most state workers and public school teachers.

The proposed spending plan will be considered by the full House this week and later by the Senate.

State employees have not had an across-the-board wage hike since fiscal 2008. The pay increase was not included in the budget submitted by Gov. Susana Martinez.

The spending plan approved by the House committee includes $239 million of additional spending next year. Another $19 million has been set aside for budget increases or tax cuts in the Senate.

Public education will receive a total of $2.6 billion in 2014, up $112 million from fiscal 2013.
