Washington Senate OKs GOs to Build Schools

The Washington State Senate passed a bill Monday that would authorize $475 million of general obligation bonds for school construction.

The measure passed 47-0 with two senators excused. The House of Representatives held the first reading of the legislation on Wednesday.

Proponents of the bill want to approve the money for schools early in the session rather than wait till the end of the session to put the allocation into the capital budget.

The bond authorization is expected to cover school district requests for the next two years.

“This goes to all three of our coalition’s top priorities,” state Senate Republican leader Mark Schoesler, R-Ritzville, said in a statement.
