Seattle Voters Pass $1.2B for School Levies

Seattle voters passed two school levies worth $1.2 billion during a special election Tuesday.

According to the Seattle Times, a three-year, $552 million levy to pay for operations was leading with 74% of the vote Wednesday, while a $695 million levy for capital projects led by with 72% approval.

The Seattle schools ballot request is the largest in city history, according to the newspaper.

The Times said the voters gave overwhelming support to the school district despite two financial scandals in the past two years and top leadership turnover.

The levies only needed a majority vote to pass.

District residents in a $400,000 home will now pay $1,150 annually in school taxes, up from $1,000 per year.
