Santa Ana City Manager Resigns

After much controversy, Santa Ana, Calif.’s city manager submitted his resignation last week.

According to reports from the Voice of Orange County, Paul Waters, the departing manager, was seen by newly elected council members as too close to Mayor Miguel Pulido.

Pulido, who has served as the city’s major since 1994, was overwhelmingly re-elected mayor, but has drawn fire from some new council members.

Walters, the city’s former police chief, was seen by some of those members as going along with Pulido’s program, according to VOC reports.

Walters was appointed interim city manager in May 2011 and then given permanent status in June 2011.

Officials said they will appoint an interim city manager next week to run the city while a national search is conducted for a replacement.

Walter’s resignation was effective Feb. 1, according to a release.

“Mr. Walters has served this city very well for many, many years,” Pulido said in a release, “and we are particularly appreciative of his leadership to the city and community during his tenure as city manager.”

Pulido fought to retain Walters in the position, but was unsuccessful.
