BRADENTON, Fla. – Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport soon begins searching for a new general manager to replace Louis Miller, who retires Jan. 3.

Miller took the helm of the world’s busiest airport in September 2010 and has overseen a number of high-profile projects, including the opening of the $1.4 billion Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal as well as increasing cargo operations and expanding concessions.

“Louis Miller has served my administration with distinction for the past three years, and made sure Hartsfield-Jackson has maintained its status not only as the busiest passenger airport in the world, but also as the center of economic activity in our region,” said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

Miller, 65, came to Atlanta after 14 years as executive director at Tampa International Airport.

He is a native of Salt Lake City, where he plans to retire.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better place than Hartsfield-Jackson to end my career,” Miller said in a statement. “After 37 years in the aviation industry, it’s been a pleasure to serve at the world’s busiest airport and to prepare Hartsfield-Jackson for a prosperous future.”

Deputy General Manager Miguel Southwell will serve as interim general manager at Atlanta. Southwell returned to Hartsfield-Jackson in June after spending 12 years as the deputy director of business at Miami International Airport.

Prior to Miami, Southwell spent 11 years at Hartsfield-Jackson in numerous positions, including interim assistant general manager for business and finance.

“I am confident Miguel Southwell will serve well in an interim capacity as we work to identify a successor capable of maintaining our airport’s position as the most successful passenger airport in the world,” said Reed.
