Maine Representative Seeks $100M of GOs

Democratic state Rep. Ann Peoples has introduced a bill for a $100 million general obligation bond in the Maine House of Representatives.

The measure would provide money for the repair, reconstruction and improvement of the state’s transportation infrastructure. Roads, highways and bridges would get $65 million. Rail lines would receive $20 million. Public transportation would benefit from $10 million. Finally, $5 million would be used for pedestrian trails.

The bill calls for a maximum 10 year bond maturity.

For the state to issue the bond, both the state House and Senate will have to approve the measure with two-thirds votes after which a majority of the voters in November would have to approve the bond in a referendum.

The bill’s title is “An Act to Authorize a General Fund Bond Issue to Invest in Transportation Infrastructure.”

On Jan. 22 the bill was referred to the House Appropriations and Financial Affairs committee.
