Two San Diego City Councilman in Mayoral Run-Off

LOS ANGELES—Republican San Diego City Councilman Kevin Faulconer and Democratic City Councilman David Alvarez will face off in a runoff election Feb. 11 to replace former San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, who resigned under pressure following a sexual harassment scandal.

Republican Faulconer grabbed the lead garnering 43.5% of the vote in the race featuring six Democratic opponents, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Alvarez earned 25.6% of the vote narrowly edging out former Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher who garnered 24.3%, by 2,638 votes,.

Filner resigned Aug. 30 after 20 women came forward this summer with allegations of sexual harassment. Filner was only nine months into his four-year term as mayor when the scandal broke.

He pleaded guilty to one count of felony false imprisonment and two counts of misdemeanor battery Oct. 15 in San Diego County Superior Court. Under the plea agreement, he surrendered his mayoral pension, will be confined to his home for three months, and serve three years of probation. He also is prohibited from seeking or holding public office.

San Diego Council President Todd Gloria has been serving as interim mayor since Filner’s resignation.
