Hidden California Accounts Targeted

California lawmakers will hold hearings to investigate the use of off-budget accounts by state agencies.

The joint Assembly and Senate committee will conduct the review in two to three weeks following a report by the Los Angeles Times that the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection hid $3.6 million outside the general fund.

The Department of Finance will audit the fund, according to a report by the newspaper.

Last year it was discovered that the Department of Parks and Recreations had hid $20 million amid budget cuts, leading finance officials to search for other hidden accounts.

The audit revealed more than $200 million that agencies had moved from view, according to the Times.
