New orders for manufactured goods rose 1.7% in September, after dropping 0.1% in August, the Commerce Department reported Monday.
The July decrease was revised to 2.8% from the 2.4% first reported. The August numbers were delayed as a result of the government shutdown.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected a 0.3% increase in September orders.
Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.2% in September, after dipping 0.4% the previous month. Excluding defense, orders rose 1.3%% after increasing 0.1% in August.
