Tavares Named N.Y. City Deputy Comptroller

New York City Comptroller John Liu named Maria Tavares deputy comptroller for accountancy.

Tavares, a 15-year veteran of the comptroller's office and now assistant comptroller of accountancy, assumed her new responsibilities Tuesday. She succeeds Simcha Felder, who was elected in November to the New York State Senate from Brooklyn.

"Maria has demonstrated herself to be exceedingly capable in ensuring the soundness of the city's financial reporting," Liu said.

Tavares, a native of Manhattan's Lower East Side and a Syracuse University graduate, will join Liu's team of nine deputy comptrollers and oversee the operations of Liu's Bureau of Accountancy, which is responsible for all aspects of the city's accounting and financial reporting.

She will oversee the city's accounting operations throughout the year, as well as the preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, which contains the city's official, audited financial statements.

Tavares will also oversee the design and management of the accounting aspects of the city's centralized accounting and budgeting system, the Financial Management System, the accounting mechanism in which New York City pays its bills and receives deposits.

Liu also announced that deputy comptroller of public affairs Ari Hoffnung will assume oversight of the comptroller's Bureau of Fiscal and Budget Studies.

Hoffnung previously was assistant comptroller of budget and will oversee the publication of a wide range of fiscal reports on New York City's economy and budgetary outlook.
