Pennsylvania Treasurer Rob McCord took aim at “Tom Corbett and his misguided agenda” in announcing his candidacy for governor.
McCord, a Democratic treasurer since January 2009, took aim at Republican Corbett’s cuts in education over four years.
“The first job of the next governor is to reverse Tom Corbett’s destructive education cuts,” McCord said in his Sept. 24 announcement.
His is the eighth Democrat to announce a run for governor. Others include U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz and Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski.
As treasurer, McCord opposed Corbett’s 20-year, $34.6 billion privatization contract with Britain’s Camelot Global Services LLC to operate the state lottery. State Attorney General Kathleen Kane voided the contract, which Corbett and Camelot are reworking.
McCord, educated at Harvard University and Harvard and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, co-founded and served as managing director of Pennsylvania Early Stage Partners, a group of three venture funds that invested in early-stage life-science and information technology firms. He also co-founded the Eastern Technology Fund, which has served more than 800 innovative companies.
McCord lives in the Philadelphia suburb of Bryn Mawr.
