For Sale: Curt Schilling's Bloody Sock

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling intends to sell the famous bloody sock he wore during a 2004 playoff game at New York’s Yankee Stadium to appease creditors of his defunct video-game company.

Heritage Auctions will auction the sock at a Feb. 23 event at the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion in New York.

Schilling listed the sock as collateral in the Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing of 38 Studios LLC, the demise of which left Rhode Island taxpayers on the hook for roughly $110 million.

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corp. provided a loan guarantee, backed by the state’s moral obligation, to move the company from Maynard, Mass., to downtown Providence in 2010.

In addition, WPRI-TV reported last week that 38 Studios owes Providence, the state capital, nearly $500,000 in tangible property taxes, according to the city’s internal auditor, Matthew Clarkin.

Schilling’s 2004 victory in New York kept Boston’s postseason hopes alive, and the Red Sox went on to win their first World Series title in 86 years.
