Preliminary September U. of Mich. Index at 76.8 vs. 82.1 in August

The University of Michigan's preliminary September consumer sentiment index reading was 76.8, compared to the final August 82.1, the preliminary August 80.0, and the final July 85.1, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 67.2, compared to the final August 73.7, the preliminary August 72.9, and the final July 76.5.

The current conditions index was 91.8, compared to the final August 95.2, the preliminary August 91.0, and the final July 98.6.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 82.0 reading for the main index, 94.8 for current conditions and 74.0 for expectations.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 3.0%, compared to 2.9% in August, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 3.2%, compared to 3.0% in August.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
