Texas Sales Tax Collections Rise

DALLAS — Texas collected $25.8 billion from the state sales tax in fiscal 2013, which ended Aug. 31, state comptroller Susan Combs said Sept. 11, including $2.4 billion in August revenue.

The number is up 7.2% from fiscal 2012.

"Both business and consumer spending contributed to the gains for the year," she said. Bright spots were construction spending and restaurant collections.

Cities, counties, transit districts, and special taxing districts will receive $575 million in September from the August collections, Combs said.

Cities will share $379.2 million of the August revenue, up 3.5% from the previous month.

Houston will receive $49.5 million this month. Since January 2013, Houston has generated $425 million in city sales tax revenues.

Other city allocations in September include $22.8 million for San Antonio and $19.3 million for Dallas.

The 10 city and regional transit districts in Texas will share $128.8 million in reimbursements. Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority will receive $52 million and Dallas Area Rapid Transit will receive $36.5 million.

The 123 counties with a local sales tax will share $36.6 billion of reimbursements.
