UC President Steps Down

University of California president Mark Yudof has said he will step down as head of the 10-campus system at the end of August.

After nearly five years leading the university, Yudof said he will take a position teaching law at the University of California Berkeley.

No replacement has been named.

“The prior 18 months brought a spate of taxing health issues. Though these challenges have been largely overcome, I feel it is time to make a change in my professional lifestyle,” Yudof said in a statement on Jan. 18. “Beyond personal considerations, this also appears to be an apt time for the university to bring in fresh leadership.”

He said it is a good time to change presidents as the university’s budget problems appear to have mostly been overcome.

As president, Yudof oversaw controversial increases in tuition across the UC system amid funding cuts from the state.

Proposition 30, passed by voters in November, helped the state government avert further cuts to university funding and Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed a budget that would increase spending on universities.
