Pennsylvania Treasurer to Schools: Seek Claim Money

Old or forgotten money might be waiting for schools to claim at the Pennsylvania Treasury, state Treasurer Rob McCord said Tuesday.

Nearly $850,000 in unclaimed property is available to claim by schools, districts and related educational organizations across Pennsylvania, according to McCord. He encouraged the entities to visit www.patreasury.gov to find out if any belongs to them.

“Many people and organizations are unfamiliar with Treasury’s unclaimed property program, but it is a legitimate resource that should be remembered when identifying available funds,” McCord said in a statement.

Each year, Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property – money from items such as abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, and contents of safe deposit boxes. Treasury is seeking the owners of $2.2 billion in unclaimed property, all of which is searchable on his department’s website.

Last week, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said city officials would borrow $50 million to enable the city’s teetering school district to open on time.
