CHICAGO — Indiana Gov. Mike Pence this week tapped the director of the Hoosier Lottery to serve as the new chief of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Karl Browning, who ran INDOT from 2006 to 2009, will return to the agency as the state's new transportation commissioner.
Browning has been at the Hoosier Lottery since 2011.
"Karl is the right leader for this agency at a critical time in the development of our state's infrastructure," Pence said in a statement. "He brings extensive experience, integrity and a steady hand to one of state government's most important tasks."
INDOT has increasingly relied on public-private partnerships over the years to raise financing for infrastructure projects, and state officials tout the state as a leader in the P3 sector.
Former INDOT commissioner Michael Cline stepped down in June to take a job as vice president for physical facilities at Purdue University, where former Gov. Mitch Daniels is now president. Several former Daniels aides have joined Purdue over the last few months, according to local reports.
