California State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, who has said he plans to retire from elective office when his current term expires, opened a campaign account for lieutenant governor in 2018, which would enable him to remain involved in politics as a campaign donor.
Lockyer spokesman Tom Dresslar said the account was opened so that Lockyer would have a place to keep his money for use beyond 2014, according to the Sacramento Bee.
“He wants to make sure he has the ability to support select candidates and causes, or as we like to say, mete out justice,” Dresslar told the Bee.
Unable to run for a third term as Treasurer due to term limits, Lockyer had expressed interest in running for State Controller in 2014, but earlier this year announced his decision to retire.
Lockyer had accumulated more than $2.2 million for the campaign for controller, according to the Bee.
