State Universities Agree to Tuition Freeze

Gov. Dave Heineman last week announced an agreement between the University of Nebraska and Nebraska State College System that would allow for a two-year tuition freeze and increase state funding for the schools.

Heineman said his proposed two-year budget would increase the University of Nebraska's state funding to $541 million from $498 million in 2015 and increase the state college system's funding to just under $50 million from $45.5 million in 2015.

The agreement affects seven schools. "In Nebraska, we understand that education is the great equalizer and that's why it is a priority for me," Heineman said in his weekly column.  "Investing in education is important to Nebraska's future. It is also critical that our postsecondary institutions manage their resources efficiently to control costs."
