Final May U. of Mich. Index at 84.5 vs. 76.4 in April

The University of Michigan's final May consumer sentiment index reading was 84.5, compared to the preliminary May 83.7, and the final April 76.4, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 75.8, compared to the preliminary May 74.8, and 67.8 in April.

The current conditions index was 98.0, compared to the preliminary May 97.5, and 89.9 in April.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 83.7 reading for the main index, 96.0 for current conditions and 74.7 for expectations.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.9%, compared to 2.9% in April, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 3.1%, compared to 3.1% in April.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
