California to Review Transportation Department

Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration has ordered an independent review of the California Department of Transportation amid controversy over the new span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, according to reports.

The Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, which includes Caltrans, said the State Smart Transportation Initiative will review the Transportation Department’s operations, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported.

The review by the group of 19 other state transportation agencies is expected to cost $270,000.

California’s transportation agency has come under scrutiny after repeated public missteps in the construction of the new $6.4 billion eastern span of the bridge.

Brown said the review has nothing to do with the bridge’s construction problems, according to the Bee.
