Sales Tax Revs Up 11%

Texas collected $2.07 billion from sales tax in April, up 11% from the same period in 2011.

Comptroller Susan Combs said oil and gas exploration and production in south and west Texas continue to boost revenues, but all sectors showed an improvement from 2011 collections.

“Sales tax revenue has now increased for 25 consecutive months,” she said.

Local government distributions total $633 million, Combs said, a 5.5% increase from last year.

Cities will share a total of $421 million.

Houston leads with an allocation of $52 million, followed by San Antonio with $23.8 million and Dallas with $22.3 million.

Disbursements to the 10 transit districts total $140.8 million.

The Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority will receive $56 million, with $39.5 million going to Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

The 123 counties with a sales tax will receive a total of $41 million in April revenues.
