Jobless Claims Up 24,000 To 399,000 in Jan. 7 Week

WASHINGTON — Seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims rose to 399,000 for the week ending Jan. 7, an increase of 24,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 375,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

Continuing claims increased to 3.628 million for the week ending Dec. 31, an increase of 19,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 3.609 million.

The 399,000 initial claims were greater than the median 375,000 projected by economists polled by Thomson Reuters and the 3.628 million of continuing claims were greater than the median 3.590 million they estimated.

The four-week moving average for initial claims was 381,750, an increase of 7,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 374,000.

The four-week moving average for continuing claims was 3.605 million, which is unchanged from the preceding week’s revised average.
