Sales Tax Rakes in $1.87B

Texas collected $1.87 billion of sales tax revenue in March, up almost 17% from collections in March 2011.

Comptroller Susan Combs said allocations to local governments will total $488.7 million.

Revenue from the retail and dining sectors accelerated during the month, while collections from the oil and gas sector remained robust, according to the comptroller.

Cities will share a total of $321.8 million, up from $279.5 million in March 2011.

Sales tax distributions to Texas cities in the first quarter of 2012 total $1.43 billion.

Houston will rake in $39.8 million from the March sales tax revenue. San Antonio will receive $17.5 million and Dallas will receive $16.1 million.

Ten of the state’s transit districts will receive a total of $110 million from March collections.

The 123 Texas counties with a local sales tax will receive a total of $32.8 million.
