State Settles With Amazon

Indiana has become the fourth state in the country to reach an agreement with Amazon.com Inc. for the retail giant to collect state sales tax on Internet purchases.

The move is expected to mean up to $25 million in new tax revenue annually, budget officials said. The state’s online sales tax receipts — currently uncollected — are estimated to total around $75 million.

Gov. Mitch Daniels announced the agreement Monday and added that he would continue to push for a federal solution.

“The only complete answer to this problem is a federal solution that treats all retailers and all states the same,” Daniels said. “But for now, Amazon has helped us address the single largest piece of the shortfall.”
