New Secretary of State

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels appointed Sen. Connie Lawson as the new secretary of state after Charlie White was convicted of six felonies, including voter fraud.

As secretary of state, Lawson will oversee the state’s elections — Indiana’s primary will be held May 8 — as well as its securities and business service programs.

“Connie was an obvious choice. Indiana has probably never been served by a secretary of state better prepared on day one,” Daniels said in a statement.

Lawson, a Republican, has been a senator since 1996, and was chairman of the local government committee, where she pushed for Daniels’ local-government reform proposals, and was chairman of the Senate Elections Committee for six years.

Before that, she was clerk of the Hendricks County Circuit Court.

White won the office in 2010, but was convicted of various felony counts, chief among that he had voted in the wrong district to cover up his move out of the school district. White is appealing the convictions.
