Expectations Exceeded

State revenues in Kansas topped $261 million in February, the Department of Revenue said last week.

Collections exceeded the official estimate of $232.2 million by 12.6%.

January’s revenues did not meet expectations by almost $31 million due to an unexpected number of income tax refunds to early filers.

Revenue in fiscal 2012 is $32 million ahead of consensus revenue estimates for the fiscal year, said Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan.

Collections in the first eight months total almost $3.7 billion, he said.

“More Kansans are working and business is beginning to strengthen, both of which are good signs for the economy,” Jordan said.

“Our financial foundation is growing stronger, but we still need to work hard to build a good economy through sound policy,” he said.

Sales tax revenues in February exceeded expectations by $10.3 million, he said, with the individual income tax bringing in $18.7 million more than predicted.
