Tunnel Tolls Come Up Short

Seattle’s Highway 99 tunnel project is now expected to only get half of the expected $400 million to pay for construction costs from tolls, according to the Seattle Times.

The newspaper said the shortfall will be made up by using Washington State’s share of federal gas-tax money.

The new estimates follow in the wake of traffic dropped after new tolls were levied on the State Route 520 floating bridge that connects Seattle with Bellevue.

The Highway 99 tunnel is part of the $3.1 billion replacement of the double-decker Alaskan Way Viaduct along the city’s waterfront.
