Cook Commish Indicted

Cook County Commissioner and former Chicago Alderman William Beavers was indicted last week on three counts of filing false income tax returns and one count of endeavoring to obstruct and impede the Internal Revenue Service.

Beavers, 77, will be arraigned Friday on federal income tax charges.

The long-time public employee allegedly failed to report money that he used as personal income from his campaign accounts and his county discretionary spending account.

“If politicians choose to use their campaign funds for personal use then they, like all the citizens they serve, share the obligation to honestly report their income and pay the correct amount of taxes,” U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said in a press release announcing the charges.

Beavers has said he will fight the charges and that he has done nothing wrong.
