LA Inks Solar Contract

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed a 25-year agreement with the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians in Nevada for a solar energy project.

When completed the project will provide power to 200,000 homes in Los Angeles.

As part of the agreement, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will construct power lines on federal lands that will connect to other solar fields already owned by the utility.

The $1.6 billion deal helps move the city toward its goal of securing 25% of its power through renewable resources by 2016, according to a LADWP news release.

When the project is complete, the city hopes to be able to shut down a coal-fired plant.  The city currently generates 40% of its power using coal.
