Memorial for Portfolio Manager Peter M. Demirali Set for Nov. 17

Peter M. Demirali, 52, of Mendham, N.J., a managing director at Cumberland Advisors died suddenly on October 30.

For the past 10 and a half years, Demirali was an investment advisor and portfolio manager at Cumberland Advisors, where he had a significant role in building the firm’s money management business. On the portfolio side, Demirali specialized in managing taxable bond portfolios, including Individual Retirement Accounts, Keoughs and pension retirement accounts, which owned taxable municipal bonds as well as Build America Bonds. He also managed the firm’s taxable municipal bond portfolios.

He became a managing director at Cumberland in 2011. His comments and analysis have appeared in Bloomberg Business News, Barron’s, the Wall Street Journal and The Bond Buyer. He has appeared on CNBC and Fox Business News, as well as Bloomberg Television.

 A 1982 graduate of Georgetown University with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration, his career spanned nearly 30 years.

Demirali started as a trader, from 1983 to 1987, at Chemical Bank, where he traded short and zero-coupon bonds and Treasuries.

From 1987 to 1989, he traded zero-coupon bonds at Yamaichi International, a Japanese securities dealer.

He later also worked as a senior portfolio manager at Smith Barney Asset Management from 1990 to 1999 where he initiated a corporate bond component for taxable fixed-income portfolios.

In addition, from 1999 to 2002, he was a partner in Anval Inc., a commercial real estate brokerage company before joining Cumberland later that year.

In his free time, Demirali enjoyed skiing, horse racing, and fishing, and was a fan of the Georgetown Hoyas and the New York Jets. He was a member of the Philadelphia Council of Business.

He is survived by his wife, Alexandra, and son Benjamin.

A memorial service is planned for Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. Terrace on the Park, 52-11 111th Street, Corona, N.Y. The family will begin receiving visitors starting at 9:30 a.m.
