Savannah Dredging Gets Go-Ahead

The $652 million harbor dredging project for the Port of Savannah, Ga. cleared a major hurdle Friday when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers signed the Record of Decision approving the project.

The decision means that the project has gone through required environmental studies and received approval from all federal agencies.

Though Georgia has already contributed bond financing toward some of the cost, the major portion of the cost is to come from federal funding, which has not been approved by Congress.

The Corps has requested that in addition to federal funding, that Congress exempt the project from a water quality permit being sought by South Carolina, which is currently the subject of litigation.
