Cuomo Announces Design-Build Award for Bridges

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the New York State Department of Transportation has awarded a $29.3 million contract through the N.Y. Works program for repairs to 13 bridges in the Hudson Valley.

The contract is New York's first under the design-build method. and the project is estimated to create 410 jobs.

"By using the design-build method, New York State is changing the way we invest in job-creating projects by cutting down on the time between when the bids go out and when the shovels are in the ground, while saving taxpayer dollars," Cuomo said.

Under the program, design-build contractors submit proposals to design and build the bridges simultaneously. Once proposals are submitted, DOT engineers determine the "best value" bid, which relies 60% on cost and 40% on a technical score.

The contract was awarded to construction contractor Harrison & Burrowes of Glenmont, and design consultant Clough Harbor & Associates of Albany.
