WASHINGTON - The U.S. international trade deficit was $42.9 billion in June, a 10.7% drop from the revised $48.0 billion deficit for May, originally reported as $48.7 billion, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.
The June deficit was smaller than the median $47.5 billion figure estimated by economists polled by Thomson Reuters, and resulted from total exports of $185 billion and imports of $227.9 billion.
The June deficit was $7.4 billion lower than the $50.3 billion deficit reported for the same month in 2011.
June exports were 0.9% higher than the previous month's revised level of $183.3 billion, originally reported as $183.1 billion.
Imports fell 1.5% below the revised May level of $231.4 billion, originally reported as $231.8 billion.
