Long Beach, N.Y. May Seek Rink Operator

Long Beach, N.Y., could issue a request for proposals by fall to operate its 38-year-old Long Beach Ice Arena, where the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers trained in the 1970s.

City Council President Len Torres told Newsday that the city will consider proposals from companies that want to manage the rink, buy its naming rights, or partner with Long Beach to renovate the facility.

The city, which faces a $10.3 million deficit, lowered the budget for the rink to $231,300 this fiscal year from $488,300, according to Newsday, which reported that revenue also declined during that period, to an anticipated $465,000 in fiscal 2013 from $657,890 in 2010-11.

The arena is home to junior hockey, pickup games, figure staking and public sessions.
