Hilliard Lyons' New Hire Expands Banking Into Ohio

CHICAGO – Louisville, Ky.-based Hilliard Lyons is extending its public finance banking reach into Ohio with the hiring of Scott Stubbins, the firm’s public finance director, Alexander Rorke, announced this week.

Stubbins, formerly of RBC Capital Markets, joined the firm earlier this month as a senior vice president to lead its Ohio efforts from Cincinnati. The office previously housed regional trading operations but did not have a municipal banking staff.

Stubbins began his career at the former Bear Stearns and then joined Seasongood & Mayer LLC, which merged with RBC in 2007.

“Scott has strong relationships with local governments and the state and strong technical knowledge,” Rorke said.

The hire is the firm’s first on the banking side since veteran Chicago-based public finance manager Rorke joined the firm late last year. His goal is to expand the firm’s originations business within its broker-dealer division, J.J.B. Hilliard, W.L. Lyons LLC, across a Midwest and Southeast footprint.

Stubbins’ hire follows the addition of two institutional sales professionals, Bill Stewart and Priscilla Dearmin-Turner.

The firm, which is more than 150 years old, operates 70 branches in 12 states with bankers located in Louisville, Indiana and now Ohio. Hilliard has five professionals devoted to institutional sales, six bankers and 17 trading, underwriting and sales professionals. The firm operates trading and underwriting desks in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.

Rorke said the firm remains in the market to add more professionals in various positions and by year-end hopes to bring in another seven bankers that range from junior to veteran status. It is not necessarily trying to meet revenue or ranking targets.

“The firm understands that this is a long-term business that takes time to build an infrastructure,” Rorke said.

Hilliard was 77th among senior managers nationally last year, 11th in Kentucky, 38th in the Southeast and 45th in the Midwest, according to Thomson Reuters.
