Topeka Passes Soccer Park Tax

The Topeka, Kan. hotel tax will go to 7% from the current 6% in 2013 to finance $4.2 million of improvements to a soccer complex.

The City Council last week unanimously approved the tax increase, which will expire after 20 years.

City officials said the improvements are needed to compete with a large athletic facility opened in 2009 by nearby Overland Park.

The $313,000 of additional annual revenue will support the bonds for the proposed upgrade. The higher rate will go into effect Jan. 1 and is to expire at the end of 2032.

The group operating the soccer complex will deed the land to the city until the debt is retired.
