California’s high-speed rail project lives on.
In a vote state officials said was key to the future of its ambitious high-speed passenger train project, the state Senate voted 21-16 Friday afternoon to move forward with the line. The state Assembly had passed the bill Thursday.
The 21 votes were the minimum needed to pass the bill in the 40-member Senate.
The bill authorizes the state to begin spending bond funds authorized by the state's voters in 2008 to begin construction of the train system, which is eventually to link the San Francisco and Los Angeles regions.
The bill was needed to secure $3.3 billion in matching federal high-speed rail grants with which to commence construction of the central portion of the line.
