Bentonville Voters Reject School Bonds

Voters in Bentonville School District No. 6, Ark., last week rejected a $135.7 million general obligation bond package that would have built the district's second high school. The proposal was opposed by 58% of voters in the northeast Arkansas district that includes the world headquarters of Wal-Mart Corp.

Superintendent Michael Poore said district officials must find another way to alleviate overcrowding at the single high school campus.

The 7.3 mill increase in the property tax would have put the district's rate at 50.4 mills, which would have been the highest school property tax rate in Arkansas.

The additional revenue would have financed construction of a 2,000-student high school.
