Shawnee, Kan., USD Eyes GO Vote

Shawnee County Unified School District No. 450, Kan., may ask voters in November for a $13 million general obligation bond package.

Trustees must set the election in August to get the referendum on the November ballot, but have until Oct. 1 if the district opts for a January mail-in election.

An election in April 2013 must be approved by trustees in early December.

Projects expected to be on the final list include a new high school auditorium for $4.6 million, renovation of an elementary school for $3 million, and high-speed fiber-optic communications lines at all for $480,000.

The district serves eastern Topeka.

The system’s $25 million of outstanding GO debt is rated Aa3 by Moody’s Investors Service. The district has an assessed property base of $1.3 billion.
