Richland County, S.C., council members are poised to try to ask voters for the second time in two years to approve a 1-cent, 20-year sales tax to finance nearly $940 million in transit and road projects.
The tax would secure about $450 million in bonds to fund part of the program. The council wants to ask voters in November to increase the sales tax to 8% from 7%, and is expected to make a final decision on the referendum in July.
The county held a similar referendum in 2010 that was defeated by about 2,000 votes.
