Agency Head Calls It Quits

The long-time director of the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority is retiring, just weeks after Gov. John Kasich released a budget proposal that would remove most of the authority’s responsibilities and nearly all of its budget.

Mark Shanahan said he is retiring at the end of the month after serving under four administrations. He was quoted in local reports as saying the move had nothing to do with Kasich’s proposal.

The proposal would move the state’s coal development office to the Ohio Department of Development. It would slice the authority’s budget by 95%.

The authority would retain its bond-issuing authority to finance a variety of clean-air projects, Shanahan said in a recent interview with The Bond Buyer.

The authority’s projects manager, Todd Nein, will serve as interim director until the board hires a new director, reports said.
