The Oakland City Council quashed Tuesday an effort by Mayor Jean Quan to put a parcel tax on the local ballot to help plug a $46 million budget hole.
The parcel tax, set at $80 per property, would generate $11 million for the city’s budget if approved by voters, according to the Oakland Tribune.
Council members voted in March to put the parcel tax on a possible statewide California ballot that has been discussed by Gov. Jerry Brown and would ask voters to extend taxes, the newspaper said.
That election has yet to get scheduled as the Democratic governor is still negotiating with Republican lawmakers over the tax issue.
On Tuesday, the majority of the City Council voted against holding a special election in July.
Council members voting against the measure said Oakland needed to give the public 10 days of notice before voting for the special election, according to the paper.
