Gary Shuts Main Library

The long-struggling city of Gary announced plans last week to close its main library by the end of the year. The move comes as the library’s annual budget is expected to drop to $2.5 million from $6.5 million, according to local reports.

The library board last week voted to close the main library, which costs $2 million annually to operate, in order to keep open all but one other branch.

“The other four options would have required us to close all of the branches but the main branch,” board president Tony Walker was quoted as saying in a local newspaper.
